Applying for a home
Changes in the way we let our homes
From April 2011 we have changed the way we let our homes. All our properties are now let through a Choice Based Lettings scheme called Homesearch, which is operated jointly by Gedling, Broxtowe and Rushcliffe Borough Councils. This means that all vacant properties are advertised in a variety of ways and applicants can bid for any property that they are interested in. Both Gedling Homes and Gedling Borough Council have written to all applicants to tell them about the changes in the way properties are re-let. Please watch our “Latest News” section on our website, where we will bring you the latest information about this change.
Are you a new applicant?
Homesearch forms can be completed on-line or downloaded from
Gedling Borough Council’s website by clicking on “Housing” in the “Living” section of the Homepage and then choosing “Choice Based Lettings”. You will find links to both these options on this page.
If you would like a paper copy please contact Gedling Borough Council and ask for a Homesearch form. Their contact number is 0115 9013901. Alternatively forms can be obtained in person by visiting their One Stop enquiry counter at the Civic Centre, Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, Nottingham, NG5 6LU.
How will the new scheme work?
This is a brief guide to how the Choice Based Lettings scheme will work.
-
Available or soon-to-be-available properties will be advertised fortnightly using media such as posters, websites, and in public places such as council offices.
-
Housing applicants will then be able to register their interest in a property - this is known as 'bidding' for a property.
-
You will be able to bid for up to three eligible properties each fortnight.
-
The applicant who has the highest priority under the scheme will become the successful bidder and, subject to checks confirming they are still eligible for housing and in the same housing need, will be offered the property.
-
If you, or someone you know, need support to take part in the Homesearch scheme, or to bid for a property, please contact Gedling Borough Council’s Housing Needs Team on 0115 9013651 and they will be able to assist you.
What happens when I bid for a property?
If you are the successful bidder and eligible for housing by Gedling Homes, we contact you by phone or in writing. We arrange to accompany you to view the property and, if you decide to accept our offer, an appointment is made for you to sign your tenancy agreement. This is an important meeting that gives you the chance to ask any questions. Your responsibilities as a tenant of Gedling Homes are fully explained and we also explain what our responsibilities are as your new landlord.
You can view information on properties that have been let through the Homesearch web-site. This shows the priority banding the successful bidder had and how long they had been waiting. These details should give you an indication of your own prospects for housing and help you to make informed decisions about what properties to bid for.
Please refer to “Your tenancy agreement” and “Moving into your new home” in the A-Z section for more useful information for new tenants.
