Asbestos in your home
Building materials containing asbestos were widely used from 1930 to around 1980, particularly from the 1960’s onwards. Any flats or houses built or refurbished during this time may contain asbestos material. If your property is less than 15 years old, it is likely that it doesn’t contain any materials made from asbestos.
Where is asbestos found?
Some common locations are listed below but there may be others in your home - if you are in doubt leave well alone and seek advice from us.
What should I do if I suspect there is asbestos in my home?
- leave asbestos alone, it’s usually safe unless it’s damaged or disturbed.
- do not attempt to remove asbestos from your home.
- do not sand, drill or saw asbestos materials.
- contact us immediately.
Actions we take on locating asbestos?
The options available to us on locating asbestos are
- leave alone (where the asbestos material is in good condition and not disturbed)
- remove it
v enclose it
- seal it
We will advise contractors on the possible locations of asbestos (where known) prior to work starting in your home.
Asbestos surveys
In certain instances an asbestos survey will need to be undertaken in your home to check if asbestos is present. This is generally where some form of destructive works is due to be carried out in your property. We may also undertake a survey if we are carrying out a day-to-day repair which may involve disturbing some asbestos based material.

- do treat asbestos with respect.
- don’t disturb materials that you think may contain asbestos.
