Reporting domestic abuse
Domestic abuse
Gedling Homes recognises that domestic abuse is an offence that has a destructive effect on people’s lives.
We are committed to taking measures to combat the impact upon the persons being abused and for any children that are being affected, and to challenge the behaviour of the perpetrators.
At Gedling Homes we believe:
- that every person has a right to feel safe in their home
- that domestic abuse is unacceptable and should not be tolerated and that abuse in any relationship is an abuse of power
- anyone experiencing domestic abuse should be supported and protected from further abuse
What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse comes from the abuser’s desire for power and control and can take many and varied forms, such as
- sexual violence
- physical violence
- destructive criticism and verbal abuse
- bullying
- destruction of property
- restrictions placed on person to see their family and friends
- oppressive control of finances
It is important to remember that a single incident can be classed as domestic abuse and that there does not have to be a series of events. Whilst most domestic abuse is carried out by men against women it also occurs in same sex relationships and to men by women.

Action against the perpetrator
Gedling Homes will instigate tenancy enforcement or other legal actions (under the Housing Act 1988) against the perpetrator if they are a tenant of ours and the abuse is proven. Our tenancy agreement specifically prohibits tenants from threatening or committing violence or causing another member of the household to leave due to this harassment. In appropriate circumstances we will signpost perpetrators of domestic abuse to relevant agencies that may be able to help them challenge and change their behaviour.
