Sheltered Housing
At Gedling Homes we provide a range of housing related services specifically for
older people. Our aim is to provide a safe home environment for older people and
those who need some additional support, whilst promoting independence. If you wish
to remain in your current home we can offer a number of services to help you to
do this. Alternatively you may want to move to accommodation that offers greater
support and is designed to make life a little easier. We can offer help and advice
to assist you in finding suitable accommodation and services, including sheltered
housing. We are also able to direct you to other agencies that can support you to
live in the community as independently as possible.
What is Sheltered Housing?
Sheltered housing is a term used to describe types of accommodation that provide
support and emergency pull cord services. They are facilitated by mobile scheme
managers. This accommodation is for older or vulnerable people who are generally
able to care for themselves and will benefit from the security and knowledge that
assistance is at hand should the need arise. It is not intended for people needing
significant care and attention.
In sheltered housing you still have your own front door. Each home has an intercom
to contact the mobile scheme manager. All tenants are able to discuss their needs
with the mobile scheme manager when they move in. This is recorded in your support
plan which is reviewed every six months.
Many sheltered housing schemes have communal facilities such as a community room,
which is used for social and community events and services. Tenants are encouraged
to support social events and contribute to the development of services in their
schemes.
The government scheme, Supporting People, currently enables Gedling Homes to provide
the support-service via funding, assisting people to live independently in their
own home. This is provided by a team of staff that work across a number of schemes
within a small geographical area.
Tenants requiring higher levels of support than the minimum support package will
be offered an assessment to identify their needs. Should a tenant require support,
this is provided by the mobile scheme manager during their normal working hours.
At all other times, tenants pull the cord and a response will come via Nottingham
On-Call Emergency Response Centre who will, where appropriate, arrange for one of
our service co-ordinators to attend. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365
days a year.
Other benefits include:
- communal laundries available at some schemes
- automatic fire alert systems
- use of communal gardens
- the majority of residents with their own television pay only a small contribution
towards the cost of the licence.
What types of sheltered housing are there?
Gedling Homes has a range of services and accommodation which you can match to your
needs. These include studio apartments, one and two bedroomed flats with internal
or external corridors, and one and two bedroomed bungalows. Full details of our
schemes and number of properties in each are shown in our Stock Summary
We offer a choice of level of contact at most of our schemes:
- daily - Monday to Friday
- once a week
- once a month
At two of our schemes, St Andrews House in Mapperley and Moreland Court in Carlton,
we offer a different level of service which is 7 days a week contact and a main
mid-day meal which is served in the communal dining room.
What can I expect from the mobile scheme manager?
The mobile scheme managers’ main roles are to:
- make contact with tenants to check on their well-being
- look out for signs of need and liaise with family, friends or professionals
- deal with emergency calls as necessary
- inform all tenants of local facilities and alternative sources of support and help
- keep accurate records and ensure the appropriate support is offered at all times
- pass on any relevant information to Nottingham On Call Response Centre
- test alarm systems regularly
- encourage and facilitate social and community activities
- carry out regular Health and Safety checks of the building
