Sheltered Housing

These are the questions we are asked most frequently at our Customer Contact Centre.

Does it matter if I have my own home?

No – owning your own property does not matter but it may affect how many points you are awarded and, if we re-house you, any benefits you are entitled to.

How old do I have to be?

We will consider applications for sheltered housing from anyone over 60 years or in receipt of DLA.

Do I have to use the warden services?

You have to pay any charges for the warden services, but you can sign a disclaimer to say you do not want this service. You change your mind at a later date if you decide you would like to use the warden services.

Can I get help paying for the warden charges?

The support charges can be met by the Supporting People Partnership if you receive any amount of the following:
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Income support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance

If you do not receive any of the above, you can still apply and your financial circumstances will be assessed by the Supporting People Partnership. Generally, you will only be eligible if your savings or other capital is less than £22,250.00

You are likely to get help if you have extra costs, such as high heating charges or need a special diet or have a low income if you are working.

To apply for help with the warden charge you should contact the Revenues team at Gedling Homes on 0115 9051545 or you can contact the Supporting People Partnership directly on 0115 8783514 or by e-mail at www.nottssupportingpeople.org.uk

Am I allowed to have pets?

You are allowed to have a cat or a dog if your home has direct access to the outside without having to use communal corridors. You are allowed to have a small pet such as a bird or tropical fish. Your tenancy conditions explain that you must not allow any pet to cause a nuisance to your neighbours.
