Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Accommodation is a term used to describe types of accommodation that provide emergency call services and that are supported by an officer or warden.

These are for older or vulnerable persons who are generally able to care for themselves and who will benefit from the companionship, security and knowledge that assistance is at hand should the need arise. It is not intended for persons needing significant care and attention.

In Sheltered Accommodation you still have your own front door, you are responsible for cooking, cleaning and everything else inside your home. Each home has an intercom to contact the warden. Many schemes have communal facilities such as a community room, which is used for social and community events and services. Tenants are encouraged to support social events and contribute to the development of services in Sheltered schemes working in partnership with the officers and wardens. There are often gardens for your enjoyment.

All tenants are able to discuss their needs with the officer or warden when they move in and this is recorded in your Support Plan which is reviewed annually. This document details your needs and what support you can expect to receive from the service.

The Government scheme Supporting People assists Gedling Homes to provide these services via funding to assist people to live independently in their own home.

All Sheltered schemes are linked to a two-way speech system where emergency help can be summoned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Lifeline Service

What is a lifeline?

Lifelines are a small piece of equipment that is connected to your telephone line which allows older or disabled people to call for help in an emergency. It can be fitted very quickly and does not require any permanent attachment to your home. Lifelines are available to Gedling Homes tenants not living in sheltered accommodation or persons in owner occupied or private rented accommodation at relatively low cost. You do not have to live alone to apply for a Lifeline and it is common for more than one person in a household to receive this service.

Lifelines offer the user the ability to remain independent in their home, confident that they can summon help or seek reassurance, wherever they are in their home. Lifelines can help people for short to longer periods of time and many people choose to have Lifelines after a period of illness or hospitalisation to reduce the worry that living at home could mean living at risk.

What we provide

We provide each home with a small unit that connects to the phone line. Each lifeline user receives a small radio transmitter (a call button) which you carry with you on a neck cord or wrist strap around your home and in the garden. Calls are made by pushing the call button and this connects to the control centre where someone will speak to you through the unit, and summon help from emergency services or relatives that you have previously told them about.

We also staff a 24 hour emergency call out service in the event that the control centre are unable to get in touch with anyone from your contact list.

We may also be able to provide additional call buttons and accessories by request
